Carlos was first introduced to Break Through Tech through the posters in the Tech Station at Florida International University, where he is studying Computer Science. He saw it as an opportunity for growth, not only as an individual but also by becoming part of a purpose-driven community.

Although Carlos suggests that the application process for Break Through Tech can be intimidating, it is well worth the effort. “I immediately understood how the Break Through Tech program aligned with my academic, personal and professional goals,” said Carlos. “Knowing this will help students maximize the opportunity.”

“In order to get the most out of Break Through Tech, you should be willing to embrace every aspect of the program.”

Carlos’ involvement with Break Through Tech eventually led to a Sprinternship™ opportunity with the Miami-Dade Information Technology Department, where he helped redesign the customer service website. “The goal was to lower the volume of calls and tickets handled by the county’s Help Desk,” said Carlos. “My team created a website that listed all the different resources that could help navigate the user through the county’s complex information sources.”

Carlos, who is scheduled to graduate from FIU in 2026, attributes his interest in technology to his grandfather. “I never knew about programming until I was in 11th grade,” says Carlos, “but we often talked about computer parts, how to make PCs, and their various operating systems.” When asked to name a personal superpower, he believes his ability to see a project through from concept to the design stage to reality is the one strength that will prove to be the most useful.

When he’s not programming, Carlos is a fan of the Harry Potter books and the alternative/indie music scene.

When asked for a final piece of advice for other students applying for a Break Through Tech fellowship, Carlos suggests that they should approach it with an open mind. “In order to get the most out of Break Through Tech, you should be willing to embrace every aspect of the program.”
