A team of Break Through Tech AI Fellows worked with AskMargot to reimagine how nurses connect with opportunities, by replacing generic job boards with intelligent, tailored recommendations.
For many travel nurses, finding the right placement can feel like a full-time job in itself. Sifting through endless listings, weighing lifestyle preferences against hospital needs, and navigating opaque hiring processes often leaves nurses frustrated and disengaged. Meanwhile, hospitals continue to face persistent staffing shortages.
Enter NurseMatch, a Challenge Project hosted by AskMargot, where a team of Break Through Tech AI Fellows set out to tackle this issue head-on. The project aimed to reimagine how nurses connect with opportunities, by replacing generic job boards with intelligent, tailored recommendations.
“We wanted to go beyond simple filters,” one fellow explained. “Nurses aren’t just looking for a paycheck, they’re looking for a match that aligns with their preferences, experiences, and long-term career goals.”
The team explored a multi-layered technical approach. They used Unsupervised Learning to cluster nurses based on quiz results and sentiment scores from reviews, uncovering hidden patterns in what nurses truly value in their assignments. They experimented with Large Language Models (LLMs) like GPT-4 to analyze open-ended reviews, extracting sentiments and themes that traditional survey questions often miss. Finally, Deep Learning Models powered personalized recommendations, matching nurse profiles with hospital needs at scale.
The potential impact is significant: improved job satisfaction and retention for nurses, stronger staffing outcomes for hospitals, and a more engaging platform experience for AskMargot users.
The project also pushed Break Through Tech fellows to sharpen their technical and collaborative skills. Working across datasets that blended structured information with unstructured text, they learned to navigate real-world data complexity, while keeping user experience at the center of their design.
For AskMargot, the NurseMatch project highlights how data science and AI can deliver both business value and human impact. By helping nurses feel seen, heard, and better matched with opportunities, the company moves closer to its vision of building a supportive, thriving community for healthcare professionals.
